FIBRE 101: POLYESTER & OTHER SYNTHETICS

FIBRE 101: A TRANSITION IN PROGRESS
Polyester, and other manufactured synthetic fibres such as nylon and elastane, are derived from petroleum. Their use and disposal comes with negative environmental impacts like the leaching of microplastics through wash and wear. At JAG, we have a preference of not using synthetics unless they provide a function that prolongs the life of the garment. Where possible, we use recycled polyester instead of virgin polyester.
THE SYNTHETICS CARE GUIDE: KEEPING YOUR SYNTHETICS OUT OF THE ENVIRONMENT
The only reason synthetics are even featured in our ranges is driven by the need for functionality that also enhances the longevity of garments. Considering this, it’s super important to keep in mind responsible care when washing your synthetic clothing.
Wash less frequently in fuller loads to not only conserve water, but also extend the life of synthetic garments.
Use cold water and reduce the washing machine's rotation level to minimise wear and tear on the fibres.
Choose eco-friendly detergents that leave a lighter touch on the environment and are gentler on synthetics.
Best tip of all: use a filter or Guppy Friend Bag. We’d hate to think that every time you wash your synthetics, microfibres or plastics are being released into the waterways. A filter or wash bag will help to trap any fibres.
Finally, avoid tumble-drying your clothing as this encourages further leaching of microfibres. Synthetic fabrics dry quickly on their own, so the best solution is always to air dry them.
