THE DENIM CARE GUIDE
17 Aug 2023
Denim is the hardest working part of any wardrobe. It’s a timeless staple that we turn to as part of our everyday wardrobe, and at JAG, we have been perfecting denim since 1972. Taking care of it is in our genes.Â
We believe in buying responsibly and prolonging the life of your denim so that you have reliable wardrobe staples to reach for season after season. In this denim care guide, we'll share some tips and tricks to help you maintain your jeans' shape, colour, and overall quality for longer.
Minimise Washing:
1. One of the best ways to extend the life of your jeans is to avoid washing them whenever possible. Most of the time, giving your jeans a good airing out between wears is enough to keep them smelling fresh.
Gentle Machine Cycle:
2. When washing your jeans is unavoidable, opt for a gentle cycle on your washing machine. Cold water is your denim's best friend as it not only requires less energy but helps preserve the colour and fibres for longer. We recommend using a mild detergent specifically formulated for natural fibres to ensure gentle cleansing without causing excessive fading or damage.
Turn Them Inside Out:
3. To protect the outer fibres of your jeans from friction in the washing cycle, it's our advice to turn them inside out before tossing them in the washing machine. This simple step will help maintain the integrity of the dye colour.
Line Dry:
4. While it may be tempting to throw your jeans in the dryer for a quick dry, it's best to line dry them. Line drying ensures that the fit and shape of your jeans is preserved and reduces the risk of shrinkage or fabric warping. Hang them in a shaded area or indoors away from direct sunlight to prevent excessive fading caused by UV rays.
Make Your Tailor Your Best Friend:
5. When your jeans start showing signs of wear, don't rush to throw them away. Instead, seek the expertise of a trusted clothing alterations specialist or tailor. They can help repair minor tears, reinforce weak areas, or even transform your jeans into shorts – giving them a new lease on life. Denim is designed to last a lifetime, and there's no reason to let go of a beloved pair prematurely.
At JAG, we understand the importance of reducing the amount of clothing that goes to landfill, and maximising the longevity of the garments you love. By following our denim care guide you can enjoy your favourite jeans for longer, while also contributing to a more sustainable future.
